Richard M. Golden


Richard Golden, Professor, is Program Head of the Undergraduate Cognitive Science B.S. and the Graduate Applied Cognition and Neuroscience M.S. Program, as well as a faculty member of the Cognition and Neuroscience Ph.D. Program within the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas.

In addition, Richard Golden is a participating electrical engineering faculty member in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a faculty member of the Human Language Technology Research Institute.

Richard Golden obtained the Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Experimental Psychology from the University of California of San Diego in 1982. He received the Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University in 1986, and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Brown University in 1987. Dr. Golden was an Andrew Mellon Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh from 1987-1988, and an NIH Post-doctoral Scholar at Stanford University from 1988-1990.

Dr. Golden has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Mathematical Psychology since 1996. He was a member of the editorial board of Neural Processing Letters from 1999-2004 and a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Neural Networks, from 1995-2006. In addition, Dr. Golden is a member of the Cognitive Science Society, International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society, Society for Text and Discourse, International Neural Network Society, secretary-treasurer of the Society for Mathematical Psychology, and an IEEE (Senior Member) who belongs to the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society

In alternating years, Dr. Golden teaches an introductory artificial neural net course using James A. Anderson's book An Introduction to Neural Networks, Neural Net Math (Spring 2009) and an advanced artificial neural net course sequence (Fall 2009, Spring 2010) based on Dr. Golden's book Mathematical Methods for Neural Network Analysis and Design. Dr. Golden also teaches special courses in the area of Text Comprehension (Spring 2010), and Probabilistic Models of Natural Language Understanding (Spring 2009) . At the undergraduate level, Dr. Golden usually teaches the core undergraduate experimental projects course (PSY3393) where students learn to read and write technical scientific papers.

Dr. Golden, in collaboration with his graduate students, are pursuing on-going research in two major areas. First, research in the area of understanding human text comprehension and memory processes. And second, fundamental research in mathematical modeling in the cognitive, social, and behavioral sciences. An important component of this research program is the mathematical analysis and design of nonlinear artificial neural networks.

In collaboration with Dr. Susan Goldman at the University of Illinois at Chicago , Dr. Golden and his graduate students recently completed a feasibility study associated with the ARCADE , (Automated Reading Comprehension and Diagnostic Evaluation) project which was supported by the National Science Foundation Information Technology Research (ITR) Initiative (Research, Evaluation and Communication (REC) Division) within the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) through a Research and Learning On Education (ROLE) Program Award (0113369). The long-term objective of the ARCADE project is to develop automated methodologies for reading comprehension assessment to support learning in classroom environments. In addition, this ARCADE feasiblity study has resulted in prototype which is relevant to text comprehension researchers for analyzing and coding free response data (e.g., recall, summarization, talk-aloud, and question-answering response data).
