Student Leaders
| UT Dallas strongly supports student-to-student teaching and learning initiatives within The Student Success Center. Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) and Supplemental Instruction are nationally recognized means of engaging students especially in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Students who participate in PLTL and SI not only reap the benefits of higher engagement with and application of course material, but also connect socially with peers who have prior knowledge, experience and success in a course. When students learn from other students, they also become more self-sufficient in managing their learning behaviors, approaches to group study, and time management. The GEMS Center has also partnered with several academic departments whose Teaching Assistants (TAs) conveniently conduct office hours and tutoring in our centralized location. Peer Lead Team Learning (PLTL) is an academic support program sponsored by GEMS. PLTL provides an active, engaged learning experience for students who meet in small groups once a week with a Peer Leader who helps guide them through this potentially difficult gateway course. Results nationally and at UT Dallas have shown that students who consistently attend and participate in PLTL attain higher grades and better student learning outcomes than students who do not. PLTL sessions meet once a week for 1 1/2 hours with a group of up to eight students and one leader. If you are enrolled in a course which offers PLTL that semester, you may opt to enroll in one of the PLTL session times offered for that course. Fall and Spring semester courses offering PLTL sessions vary each semester, so at the beginnig of every long semester (Spring and Fall) check offerings on this page.
