Login Session Expired Message Causes and Resolutions
Normal Operation
When a login is completed, a “session” is created to maintain an identity and related information for a particular person. Normally, a session will remain active during use, even if left unattended for several minutes before the session “times-out.” After logging out, or closing the browser, a person’s session is destroyed.
Session Expired Problem
Sometimes simply closing and restarting your web browser can clear the problem. However, there a number of potential obstacles that can interrupt a session or prevent a session from being created:
- JavaScript, cookies, and/or
SSL are disabled.
Please enable cookies on your browser and try again. - Your SIS session was left inactive for too long. Simply logon again.
- You’ve already exited from SIS. Once you exit, you must login again.
- Your PC is running Web accelerator or download-accelerator software. If you have purchased or downloaded one of these accelerator programs, please uninstall them or disable them while attempting to use SIS.
- You are using AOL’s browser. There is an issue with the AOL caching proxy server and the AOL web browser. The workaround is to log into AOL and then open a separate instance of IE or Firefox in order to access SIS. You will likely run into problems if you use AOL’s browser. (The phone number for AOL technical support is (800) 827- 3338.)
- Excessive system load. The mainframe system could not respond to your request within a reasonable period of time.
- You pressed your browser’s Stop button or the Esc key, and then clicked a link. Interrupting SIS while it is working on your request requires that you log back in.
- You are behind a firewall. As a security measure, SIS builds a key to identify you and your session. This key includes your current IP address. If you are coming through a firewall, it is possible that the internal IP address will be translated to a different external address for each HTTP request (a click on a link.) SIS views this as a security breach and tells you that you must log in again. To solve this, see your network administrator to get a static IP address or map to a static translation.
- Your Internet provider uses HTTP proxies. As a security measure, SIS builds a key to identify you and your session. This key includes your IP address. If you are coming through a proxy server, the proxy server may use multiple IP addresses. If the proxy attempts to get pages using different IP addresses, SIS will view this as a security violation and tell you that you must log in again. With some browsers it is possible to use a proxy server but set exceptions. Using this feature, a browser will not go through the proxy for sites listed as exceptions thus alleviating the problem. See your browser’s help menu for instructions and set an exception for https://gocomets.utdallas.edu.
- You are using MSNtv. MSNtv uses HTTP proxies (see above) with their set-top boxes. There is currently no solution available for MSNtv users. The problem lies with the configuration of the MSNtv set-top boxes and cannot be resolved by the University
- You clicked a link twice. Links should be clicked once. If you click a link twice, no matter how much time passes between the two clicks, you will be logged out.
Be sure to log out of Web for Students and exit from your browser when you are finished. Leaving a Web for Students session logged in and unattended invites others to view and change your student information.
