Chinese Culture Courses

China is a country with a long history and wondrous culture. These courses are designed for those who want to have a deeper understanding of the culture and traditions from different aspects.

  • A Glimpse of China:
    This course will present salient features of traditional and contemporary Chinese society. The selected topics will include: Chinese history, geography, population, ethnic minorities, religions, festivals, food, operas, music, dance, and other arts. The course will be conducted through a combination of lectures and digital presentations.

  • Chinese Culture:
    This course introduces students to essential aspects of Chinese culture. It will read selected texts and view digitized materials that cover a wide range of topics including Chinese history, philosophy, language, literature, religions, arts, people, society, and general ways of life, It aims to provide opportunities for a deep understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture and to prepare students for further inquiries into Chinese studies.

  • Chinese Calligraphy:
    This course will focus on the history, basic styles, techniques of Chinese calligraphy and the art works of well-known masters. Students will learn basic skills of how to do brush work, learn the theory of calligraphy, and create calligraphy pieces. They will also learn how to appreciate fine works of this unique Chinese art form, and finally create their own art works.

  • Chinese Painting:
    This course is designed to familiarize students with the history and basic skills of Chinese painting, teach them how to paint objects like plants, flowers, animals and other typical themes in Chinese painting. It will also introduce famous Chinese painters and their works. Students will have an overview of traditional painting styles, master basic Chinese painting skills through basic painting exercises in various subjects, and learn how to appreciate Chinese painting works.

  • Tai-chi Fitness Class:
    This is a course that aims to strengthen the learners' body and mind from within through a traditional fitness exercise. Tai-chi boxing used to be form of Chinese martial art, which has now developed into a popular form of fitness exercise for the cultivation of body and mind. Tai Chi provides the mental relaxation and physical fitness so essential in our modern stress-filled lives. Employing special postures and methods of breathing control, Tai Chi boxing is fluid, graceful and well balanced, promoting the complete harmony of body and mind. Introducing different styles, the Tai-chi classes will be offered on both week days and weekends to suit the needs and schedule of those who wish to take them.

  • Chinese Paper Cutting:
    Paper cutting is the art of creating patterns, designs or pictures by using scissors to cut paper in various ways. It originated in China after the invention of paper in around 100 BC. This course aims to introduce the history and basic techniques of Chinese paper cutting, cultivate the ability to appreciate this special Chinese arts form, and learn the skills to create Chinese paper cutting works.
