American Thought 1890-1910

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were key eras in the formation of modern American thought and culture. The birth of a highly organized modern society based on corporate capitalism and new forms of institutional authority such as the modern university and professional organizations marked a fundamental change from the pre-Civil War past. The influence of new modes of scientific thought, the declining power of traditional forms of religious thought and authority, and the development of a new leisure and consumer ethic, the development of urban pluralism in a society of increasing immigration: all led to a challenge to old forms and ways of knowing, and an embrace—sometimes critical, sometimes reluctant, sometimes enthusiastic—of new ways of thinking about the world. This course focuses on some key thinkers and texts, particularly in the realm of social thought, social science and modernist ideology at this critical period in the formation of modern thought: the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We will be reading both primary writings by American thinkers and a selective sample of important scholarly literature on American thought and culture during this period. Topics covered will include modernism and antimodernism; post-Darwinian thought, pragmatism, feminism, progressivism, the rise of social science.
