Guitar I

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This course is designed to enable the student to develop a rudimentary understanding of classic guitar style, as well as the ability to employ the technique. Students will also learn the fundamentals of reading sheet music for the guitar and come to understand some of the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic aspects that pervade most musical forms. Students will develop the foundation that will enable them to pursue intermediate level studies in group classes and/or guitar ensembles. They will also have numerous opportunities to be exposed to guitar performances featuring many of the facets of guitar technique addressed in this class at events sponsored by The University of Texas at Dallas such as the Texas Guitar Competition and Festival. There are guitars available to the students through our loan program.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Frederick Noad's Solo Guitar Playing: Book One, 3rd/4th ed.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

A nylon string/classical or steel string acoustic guitar, a footrest (or guitar support)
