Course Title:
English Syntax and Mechanical Structure

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

We will conduct a linguistic analysis of English syntax: the rule-governed system that native English speakers acquire as children and manipulate so effortlessly, usually without the slightest recognition of its complexity and elegance. Students will examine how words combine to form grammatical phrases and how phrases are joined to form clauses and sentences. We will also examine the validity of the "grammar" we learn in schools.
