Description of Course:

This course will cover the history of cinema from its invention in the 1890s to today, and will look at a mix of films from countries around the world, including the US. We will discuss films and film movements with an eye towards understanding how the historical contexts of a film, including technology, economics, and art movements outside of film, affect the final film we see on the screen. We will also discuss issues in film historiography, which is the study of film history itself, including what assumptions, frameworks, and contexts influence how history is written.
