Course Title:
Victorian Literature

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This course is a comprehensive survey of the Victorian period of English literature (1830-1900). Authors include Tennyson, the Brownings, the Brontes, Dickens, Trollope, Swinburne, Wilde, and Hardy. Major works: novels by Charlotte Bronte, Trollope, Dickens and Hardy. While themes include the clash between science and religion, Victorian morality, and Victorian social views, a particular focus will be on Victorian conceptions of the moral effects of works of literature on the reader.

Short writings, midterm, final, one paper, and class presentations.
