Course Title
Survey of Western Art History: Ancient to Medieval

Description of Course:

This course is an introduction to painting, sculpture, and architecture in the West from prehistory through the Middle Ages, including the achievements of the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. Art monumnents will be studied within their historical, religious, and social contexts, with particular focus on the development of style.

Required: Fred S. Kleiner, Gardner's Art through the Ages: The Western Perspective, vol. 1, 13th ed., 2010

Recommended: Bruce Cole, The Informed Eye: Understanding Masterpieces of Western Art, 1999

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

Assigned reading

Three exams consisting of slide identifications, comparisons, brief essay, and short answer

Museum assignment: a brief paper comparing and contrasting two works of art at the Dallas Museum of Art; thorough guidelines will be provided
