Contemporary Exhibitions

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This course introduces the litany of operational responsibilities and creative directives of a visual arts gallery and exhibition spaces . From distinguishing the variations of gallery species to the specifics of proposing exhibition ideas, public relations, artistic curating, director/ dealer/curator relationships and financing, this course explores the behind the scenes activity of creating and presenting an exhibition. Special guest presentations will provide professional insight reflecting various aspects of their gallery/art space enterprises. Hands on experience of art handling, hanging, lighting and presenting work will be an accompanying part of this course agenda. Off site visitations and participatory assisting will offer variations of these experiences. Students will be assigned special projects to assist with and will maintain a lab book as part of their grade evaluations.

Requirements:

There will be several field trips which you will be required to go to. They will be scheduled in advance. Field trips will be on Wed. nights and two Saturdays which are optional but earn points.

Textbooks:

Assigned Readings will be provided.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Various reading handouts along with films will be assigned

No prerequisites. There will be several field trips which you will be required to go to. They will be scheduled in advance. Field trips will be on Wed. nights with one on a Friday afternoon and one on a Saturday.
