Course Title:
Reading and Writing Texts

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

The topic of this course is testimony: text that tells the truth and thereby changes those who read it. We'll examine how three disciplines approach testimonies or the idea of testimony. For literary studies, we'll focus on the possibilities and limitations of representing real-life events. For history, we'll examine questions of accuracy. And for creative writing, we'll see what it means to express an experience in form. Assignments will be designed to help you to hone your skills of reading and writing analytically. This is a writing intensive course.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Textbooks will be ordered at the on-campus bookstore and Off-Campus Books.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Attentive reading of course materials; brief writing assignments on a regular basis; longer analytic papers reflective of disciplinary conventions, written in drafts.
