DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

We will read the greatest Christian epic poem, Dante's Divine Comedy. There will be a weekly short-answer quiz on the readings and discussion (40%), and three short papers (800-1000 words) on each of the three canticles, Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise (20% each).

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Dante, The Divine Comedy, Mandelbaum translation.
Vita Nuova, Musa or Reynolds translation.
Thomas Cahill, Mysteries of the Middle Ages.
handout on poetry of Provence, Sicily, and Italy.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

as described above.

Knowledge of Italian is NOT required.
