Course Title:
Jazz Band II

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

Jazz Band II is a medium to large ensemble, whose repertoire draws from a wide range of jazz
big band and/or combo styles. Players have an opportunity to play swing, rock, funk, latin, and
other styles. The band has several performances each semester at various campus venues.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

No text is required. Instructor may request that a student obtain certain materials specific to his or her needs.

Students must provide their own instruments. The university does provide drum set, amplifiers
for bass and guitar, keyboards, and bari sax.

Brass players must provide their own mutes (trumpet – Harmon and straight or cup; trombone –
straight or cup).

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Must be able to play an instrument and have experience reading music. Instructor approval (or
previous enrollment in UTD Jazz Ensemble I or II) required.

Attendance is required. Members are expected to spend time outside of class practicing their music, and arrive to rehearsals with their music learned. Attendance at performances is required. Students are also required to attend 1 jazz performance by an international jazz artist on campus this semester and write a short report of the concert.
