Course Title:
Shakespeare: Page to Stage

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

We will read a half-dozen or so plays by Shakespeare and see clips from various film versions. The course emphasizes how the texts of Shakespeare are transformed as they are interpreted on the stage or in film. Our emphasis will be on performance.

I expect we'll consider Othello, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet, Falstaff, Julius Caesar, and one or two others.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Any Shakespeare text which has act, scene, and line divisions is acceptable. No dumbed-down edition of Shakespeare (Shakespeare in modern English, whatever) is acceptable.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

A weekly quiz consisting of five short-answer questions worth two points each and two additional questions that will be the same for each quiz. The top ten quiz grades will be added and curved and will be worth 40% of the final grade.

Two short (800-1000 word) papers each worth 20%.

A group project consisting of a video of a scene from a Shakespeare play (20%).

You will also be required to attend a performance of a Shakespeare play in the Metroplex.
