DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

A close reading of the great Christian epic, The Divine Comedy.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Dante, The Divine Comedy, translated by Mandelbaum
Dante, Vita Nuova, any translation
Thomas Cahil, Mysteries of the Middle Ages

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Three short (800-1,000 word) papers, one on each of the canticles (Hell, Purgatory, Paradise) and each worth 20% of your final grade. A weekly short quiz. The top ten scores will be added, curved, and will be worth 40% of your final grade.
