Fall 2012 - Undergraduate Course Descriptions
Description of Course:
What does it mean say we “know English?” As speakers of English we effortlessly utilize a complex, rule-based system of grammar (syntax) while remaining unaware of its elegance and detail. This course will reveal this system used every day to communicate our experience, desires, and imagination. Students will learn about the basic systems which comprise English grammar and to be able to make these systems explicit to others. The field of syntax attempts to construct a set of rules by which we build words into phrases, phrases into clauses, and clauses into larger clauses and sentences.
