Course Title:
Creating Short Stories

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This course will focus on the practice and study of the composition of original creative short fiction on the intermediate level. Specifically, students will be asked to demonstrate competence in the understanding of modern English language and in the creation of credible character, setting, and detail, as well as in the understanding of plot structures and a variety of writing techniques as exhibited in the American short story from the earliest periods through the present time. Additionally, the course will address approaches to editors and publishers will be introduced, as it is needed.

Central to the course will be a discussion of grammar and stylistic techniques, rhetorical techniques and devices, as well as a general discussion of the market for publishing fiction.
