Course Title:
Creating Music

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

Creating Music counts toward the upper level theory component of the Music Minor. Students should contact mary.medrick@utdallas.edu for more information.

This course will explore the creative process and the construction of music for film and video and/or for the concert hall. The class will compare musical examples from a wide array of styles and periods and survey software applications used in the professional world of composing and audio design. This semester will include projects manipulating recorded sounds with music and producing musical clips for underscoring spoken word or short films.

Students will work individually and in teams to complete in-class improvisational exercises and projects using vocal/instrumental resources of fellow students. Emphasis will be placed upon discovery and practical application of musical skills that lead to expression in music.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Grading will be based upon: Attendance/Participation 20%, Short Written Assignments 30%, Quizzes 20%, Final Project 30%
