DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This class is designed for the piano student who wishes to advance after at least one semester in Piano I at UTD or who may have had prior piano training. Students must read music fluently, have established piano technique (scales and other exercises) and have played piano repertoire from various periods. A variety of resources will be made available for remedial study, including online listening materials, music dictionaries and theory software. For practice, students will have access to the keyboard lab and several other rooms on campus with acoustic pianos. Class time will consist of lecture, demonstration, discussion, group exercises, supervised practice and performance.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

By midterm, students will write an essay review concerning piano technique, based upon one of the following books:
Basic Principles in Pianoforte Playing by Josef Lhevinne or Piano Technique by Walter Gieseking or other book on the subject, upon approval.

Music will be individually selected and purchased as needed.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Grades are based upon consistent participation and measurable improvement in technique and repertoire.
Attendance and participation 20%, Preparation of exercises and repertoire 30%, Written assignments 20%, Recital Attendance 10%, Final Jury/Recital 20%.
Students are required to attend and review at least two events during the semester.
