Course Title:
Survey of British Lit, 1800-1950

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This will be a traditional survey of major trends in British literature from 1800 to 1950. We will read a mix of poetry, drama, and fiction, looking at how each text both represents aspects of its culture and adds to the literary tradition. Authors to be discussed include Wordsworth, Shelley, Tennyson, Bronte, Dickens, Doyle, Wilde, Kipling, Sassoon, Woolf, Eliot, Isherwood, and Auden.

C. Bronte, _Jane Eyre_ (Penguin edition)
V. Woolf, _Mrs. Dalloway_ (Mariner annotated edition)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

40% preparation, attendance, class participation, and short homeworks
60% 3 in-class exams
