Course Title:
Early American Literature

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

Study unexpected encounters and attempts to assess the unknown, including the strangeness of other people, plants, animals, and one's own mind. This course will examine texts on kidnapping, mesmerism, and sleepwalking, among other topics, from the 1600s to the 1800s. Writing practice and instruction will be incorporated.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Books will be ordered at the on-campus bookstore and at Off-Campus Books on Campbell Road.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Regular attendance, careful reading, several brief writing assignments in preparation for a final paper.
