Topics in Theater: Set Design

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This course is designed to introduce students to the process of creating sets for the stage, as well as the history of scenic design. Classes will focus on such topics as visual research, sketching, model-making, and drafting. Contemporary and classic plays will be discussed. Special emphasis will be placed on text analysis, which students will be able to apply to other areas of theatrical design.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

We will be using Gillette's Theatrical Design and Production, 7th Edition as our main text, as well as the following plays: God of Carnage (Reza/Hampton), The Importance of Being Earnest (Wilde), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare).
