DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This is essentially a "careers in history" course that examines the production of history for public, as opposed to academic, consumption, and will acquaint students with fields like historic preservation, historical archaeology, business and policy history, and archival, museum, and documentary studies. Staying (mostly) within the realm of American history, we will also explore past and present controversies over historical representation in public settings, the role of memory in American culture, and the myriad strategies employed by historians in helping the general public navigate a complex, contested, and often problematic past.
