Piano II

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This class is designed for the piano student who reads music well and who has established basic piano technique through prior study. Students will become proficient in major and minor scales and a variety of other keyboard skills. During the semester, students will prepare for three in-class workshops and at least one public performance, including Festival. Repertoire is individual and will be assigned during the first week of the semester.

For practice, students have access to the keyboard lab and several other rooms on campus with acoustic pianos. Class time will consist of lecture, demonstration, discussion, group exercises, supervised practice and performance.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Hanon Exercises, any edition of all 60

One of a selection of paperbook books discussing piano technique. A 3-page written response will be due by midterm.

Musical repertoire will be selected during the first week of classes.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Attendance and class participation are required. Students will be expected to arrive on time, with materials, ready for class. At least 6 hours per week will be needed for practice time outside of class. Completion of 3 or more musical selections is required each semester. Students will perform in recitals and on Festival at the end of the semester.
GRADING: 25% attendance/participation, 25% written assignments, 25% preparation of exercises and other assigned material, 25% final performance
