Understanding Dance

Description of Course:

This course is an overview of dance in contemporary culture. The focus for this semester is on western dance styles and forms (ballet, modern, jazz, tap) although world and other forms will be explored if time allows. The course includes some (3) in studio sessions that will provide students with practical experience in selected dance forms. Students will have the opportunity to look into and report on dance styles and forms that interest them in addition to being exposed to the history and current practices of western dance.

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

The three practicum studio session will require that students dress for movement in loose flexible clothing. No special dance specific attire is required. Students may be required to watch video outside of class and to attend up to three dance events outside of class. Expect supplemental reading assignments (distributed in class or through eLearning).
