Course Title
Creating Short Stories

Description of Course:

This course is a creative workshop in which students will investigate the creative processes involved in writing the short story and will explore the boundary between fact and fiction, as they experiment with a variety of traditional and experimental forms.

Required Texts:

FICTION: A POCKET ANTHOLOGY edited by R.S. Gwynn (7th edition only).
MAKING SHAPELY FICTION by Jerome Stern(any edition).
THE ART OF FICTION by Michael Kardos (December 2012 edition).
THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE edited by William Strunk and E.B. White (any edition).

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

During the course of the semester, students will participate in a number of writing exercises. They will also write 3 complete short stories and will revise 2 of these stories. Students will also write critiques of 3 peer-generated stories. Note: Stories written prior to this class will not be accepted to fulfill the requirements of this course.
