Course Title
Music Theory I

Description of Course:

Students will acquire basic writing skills in music. Work includes written assignments in harmony and form, analysis of representative works from the literature, keyboard harmony, ear training, and singing in solfege. The course will cover cadences, non-harmonic tones, period structure, and harmonic progressions.

Students should have prior knowledge of music fundamentals -- scales, key signatures, intervals, and chords. The course will begin with a short review of fundamentals.

Required Texts:

Music in Theory and Practice, Vol. I, 9th Edition (workbook included) - Benward and Saker

Books are available in the UTD and off-campus bookstores. If ordering online, allow time to receive both books (text and workbook) by the first week of class. Beware of used books with missing and marked-in pages. Students already owning the 8th edition may still use it.
