Childhood in 19th-cent England

Description of Course:

The "long" nineteenth century saw the development of the children's literature we still love, from _Alice in Wonderland_ to _Peter Rabbit_ to _Peter Pan_. We will read and enjoy these classics, but we will also explore the darker aspects of childhood in the period, using a range of fictional and extraliterary texts.

Required Texts:

TBA. Authors will probably include Robert Owen, Charlotte Bronte, Dickens, and others, in addition to the authors of children's literature.

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

Participation in seminar discussion: 60%
Fifteen-page seminar paper, revised: 40%
