Science and the Humanities

Description of Course:

This course will examine literary and artistic creations that embody historical moments in scientific advancement and disease outbreaks. For example, when germ theory replaced miasma theory—the belief that people got sick because of “bad air” was replaced by the knowledge that bacteria and viruses carry disease—how did fantasy writers use germs to create stories of the horrific unseen.

Some topics this class may cover are:

The development of the microscope
Germ theory
Miasma theory
The Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918
Viral outbreak stories
