Course Title
English Syntax and Mechanical Structure

Description of Course:

Educators are often critical of students’ language use but fail to provide a broad, coherent description of language that includes grammatical structure, dialect differences, and writing style. This leaves students with a vague insecurity about language use, but lacking the knowledge to evaluate claims about language.

In this course students will learn to judge for themselves the acceptability of language use. We will examine the English language beginning with its smallest component part, the morpheme, and examine how we assemble morphemes into words, words into phrases, phrases into clauses, and clauses into sentences.

Required Texts:

Klammer, Thomas. "Analyzing English Grammar"

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

3 exams, 3 homework assignments, semester project, extensive in-class exercises
