Course Title
Music Theory I

Description of Course:

Students will acquire basic writing and analytical skills in music. Work includes written assignments in harmony and form, analysis of representative works from the literature, ear-training, solfege singing, and keyboard harmony. Students will read, hear, sing, and play music with an understanding of harmonic and melodic functions and relationships.

Required Texts:

Music in Theory and Practice, Vol. I, Benward and Saker (textbook and workbook).

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

The course begins with a quick review of music fundamentals: scales, key signatures, intervals, triads. Prior knowledge of music notation and fundamentals is recommended.
