Artist Statement/Description:

Upon first committing to this project, my goal was to be completely at peace with myself once the work was done. As I proceeded however, I discovered the concept of “making peace” does not mean grasping a tangible object or state, but rather adopting a practice to be repeated daily. Making peace is a ritual, an exercise, even a game, that provides a lesson on life every single moment.

This project is a draft. Often I feel my best work appears in the drafts – in my writing, poetry, sketches, and informal drawings. It is when my emotions are most raw. There is no anxiety regarding presentation, all emphasis is on the emotion and the idea. These pieces are not just about myself. On a societal scale I sense dissatisfaction and pain. My declaration to make peace with myself therefore is not only for inner peace but as a message to others. An affirmation of what you already know, a provision of some external encouragement.

As stated in 2015: “my work focuses on introspection and the inner conflict that occurs in an individual’s quest for self-betterment and growth. Though much of the work expresses darkness, pain, and struggle, I always seek to move past despair and avoid self-pity at all costs. I do believe art is therapy, but therapy does not mean simply wallowing in one’s sadness. My work expresses sadness and then provides a resolution; a determination to move forward.”

Selwa Moharram received her BA in Arts & Performance from UTDallas, with a concentration in Visual Arts. Born and raised in North Texas, Moharram moved to her parents’ home country of Egypt in her teens, where her interest in artistic self-examination was sparked. She currently resides in Plano, dividing her time between working as a communications assistant, creating narrative artwork, and dancing.
