Minor in Music Studies
Students who have a serious interest in music, but are majoring in other areas, may wish to pursue the Minor in Music Studies (18 hours).
Like other minors, the Music minor is six hours of lower division courses plus twelve of upper division, divided between music history, theory and performance, including ensembles. A student who takes Understanding Music (MUSI 1306) or Music in Western Civilization (MUSI 2322) to fulfill the Core arts requirement already has three of the lower division hours. The other lower level requirement, Music Theory (MUSI 2328) fulfills the other requirement. Participation in UT Dallas' Orchestra, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Band, Chamber Singers or Advanced Music Ensemble can count for six hours of upper division credit. Alternatively, a student may choose to pursue upper division study in voice or an instrument (guitar or piano). To fill out the studies, a variety of music history (MUSI 3322 History of the Guitar, History of Song, History of Chamber Music) and music theory (MUSI 3342 Music Theory II, MUSI 4348 Creating Music or MUSI 3389 Digital Music) courses make up the additional coursework at the upper level.
