Learning Record Online:
Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Learning Record Online?

The Learning Record Online is a web-based application program that provides a type of electronic portfolio where individual students can document their learning activities throughout the term of a class. It provides an online record of individual student learning, and hence the name: Learning Record Online, or LRO. Teachers may observe and comment upon many of the items students include in their LRO and can use this online portfolio to help evaluate individual student learning.

Why Do I Have To Use The Learning Record Online?

The State of Texas requires that its university writing programs implement and utilize some system to measure student learning over time and in certain learning strands. The University of Texas at Dallas requires that an uniform and consistent grading criteria be applied to all student work in our Rhetoric classes. The Learning Record Online (LRO) provides a platform on which to meet these various requirments in a humane and educationally sound manner.

The LRO presents a much clearer picture of a student's learning throughout the term of a course. It also makes it possible for students to account for experimental writing, or "invisible" work such as collaboration with other students. The LRO, because it functions as a portfolio of student work, can document observations and analysis that show a student has learned something significant from his or her work around the submission of the "final" draft of any writing assignment. It can help give both the student and the teacher a much clearer picture of a student's learning throughout the term of a course and in certain learning strands. And, as long as the material archived in a student's portfolio show student has learned something significant, the LRO can support a more positive evaluation of student learning than conventional grading.
