Learning Record Online:
Moderations Procedure

At midterm and at the end of the semester a procedure is conducted within the Learning Record Online called "moderations." Essentially, this procedure allows students in your class to read and comment on each other's work. This peer review can be an important component of a student's learning, as well as an assessment of their overall development in the course. The procedure for facilitating a moderation session within your class Learning Record Online is detailed below.

  1. Put your students in pairs with the pair sitting at ONE computer (they are BOTH going to be logging in to this moderation at the same computer, BUT NOT YET).
  2. You log in to your LRO and select your class. NOTE: DO NOT LET YOUR STUDENTS LOG IN YET.
  3. Scroll down on your first screen of options and select Start an in-class Moderation.
  4. Click SET UP OR RETURN TO IN CLASS MODERATION.
  5. The next screen says you have created and enabled the in class moderation and NOW your students can log in. One of the two students at the computer should log in to their LRO. On their first screen they should scroll down and click on LOG IN TO AN IN CLASS MODERATION.
  6. There will be a box with a list of various classes that have moderations already enabled. It is important that they find YOUR class and click on that one. Then they click CONTINUE.
  7. The next screen has TWO sets of boxes, one for each student in the pair to log in to the moderation. So, the first student has to re-enter their login ID and password, and the second student now enters their login ID and password, then they click LOGIN. But they should NOT click on anything else yet.
  8. AFTER everyone of your student pairs have logged in to the moderation. THEN you click on your screen START MODERATION.
  9. AFTER you have started the moderation, then the student should click on RETRIEVE LEARNING RECORD.
  10. The LRO program itself chooses a portfolio at random, with no identifying information about the student. A new web page appears and asks three questions and has a place for general comments. Once they have read and discussed the portfolio and answered the questions and filled in their general comments, then they click SUBMIT (or something like that), and that reading is over. IF there is time to do a 2nd portfolio reading, then they can click RETRIEVE LEARNING RECORD and do a second reading.
  11. AFTER everyone has finished, then you can click STOP MODERATION. The comments should be viewable by the students in their portfolio from their main first screen later after they log in. You should also be able to see the comments if you select a student in your teacher view, then once you have a student record on your screen, there is a VIEW MODERATION COMMENTS link.
