Conference 2011

The 2011 ALTA annual conference was held at the InterContinental Kansas City at the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, from November 16-19, 2011. The theme for the 2011 conference was Translating Voices: Where the Great Plains Meet the World. Among the many highlights were:

  • the presentation of the 2011 National Translation Award to Lisa Rose Bradford for Between Words: Juan Gelman’s ‘Public Letter’
  • the presentation of the second Lucien Stryk Translation Prize to Charles Egan for Clouds Thick, Whereabouts Unknown
  • a special tribute for Dr. Margaret Sayers Peden at the Mexican consulate
  • readings and performances at the Kansas City Public Library and the American Jazz Museum
  • keynote speeches by Paul Vangelisti and Douglas Hofstadter
  • a keynote event featuring the ALTA Fellows reading their winning translations

Conference attendees also took advantage of all that Kansas City has to offer, including its wide range of art museums, entertainment, and regional cuisine.

Conference activities took place at the InterContinental Hotel near Country Club Plaza. Staff at the hotel provided exceptional service, helping to make the 2011 ALTA Conference a great success once again!
