The PEN American Center sponsors a number of awards for translators and work in translation -- PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize, PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, the Gregory Kolovakos Award ,and the Translation Fund for publication support. National Translation Award
Each year, ALTA invites publishers to nominate book-length translations, published in the preceding calendar year, for the ALTA National Translation Award. The award-winning book and translator are announced and featured at the annual ALTA conference held each fall. The translator selected for this award receives a cash gift, currently set at $2500.

To be eligible for the award, a translation must have been published during the preceding calendar year by a U.S. or Canadian publisher and must be a book-length work, in English, of fiction, poetry, drama, or creative non-fiction (literary criticism and philosophy are not eligible). For nominated books selected as finalists, publishers will be asked to provide an original-language version of the text; any finalist for which no original-language version is provided will be excluded from further consideration. The criteria for judging the award are: (1) the significance of the literary contribution of the original as well as of the translation; and (2) the success of the translation in recreating the artistry of the original. Translations of contemporary works will receive preference, although important retranslations or first-time translations of older works will also be considered to the degree that they make significant contributions to literature.

The deadline for nominating books published in the preceding calendar year is March 31. For each nominated book, send a letter of nomination, four copies of the book, and a $25 entry fee (check for U.S. funds made to ALTA) to:

Nordic Translation Conference

First Call for Papers

The Nordic Translation Conference will take place in London at the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies on 7 and 8 March, 2008.

For the first time, a major conference is being planned all about Nordic translation. While many conferences on translation frequently include a presentation or two that mention Nordic issues, however peripherally, there has not yet been an event solely dedicated to the particular challenges and pleasures of translating between and among the Nordic countries, which are often closely related culturally, if not always linguistically. It should be exciting for academics and translators working on and with the Nordic languages to gather, discuss, and exchange ideas. The speakers will include Douglas Robinson, Kirsten Malmkjær, Tiina Nunnally, and Geoffrey Samuelsson-Brown.

The conference will look at literary and non-literary translation of all kinds, including interpreting and subtitling, both between various Nordic languages and also between English and the Nordic languages. Nordic here includes Danish, Faroese, Finnish, Greenlandic, Icelandic, Norwegian, any of the Sámi dialects, and Swedish. Topics can include, but are not limited to, specific linguistic issues involved in translation/interpretation between two or more languages, analysis of particular texts/genres, professional issues, the translator/interpreter’s role, and the effect of cultural similarities/differences among Nordic countries. Both academics and practicing translators are encouraged to attend and present at the conference.

Graduate Students Translation Conference, March 28-30 2008

The Center for Literary Translation at Columbia University will proudly host the third in a biannual series of graduate student translation conferences, in March of 2008.
The first such conference was hosted by UCLA in 2004; the conference then moved to Iowa for its 2006 incarnation. Planned and carried out almost entirely by graduate students, the 2008 conference will bring together Columbia University grad students from a variety of departments who are interested in translation with grad students from across the country for three days of intensive workshops, programs and discussion.

The ALTA Travel Fellowship Award is for beginning (unpublished or lightly published) translators. We offer fellowships for travel to the annual ALTA Conference held each autumn, at which a featured event is readings by the invited fellows. Introduction:
Following the great success of two previous conferences hosted by Dublin City University, this event aims to provide a platform for postgraduate students in the field of Translation and Interpreting Studies to present their research in a supportive environment and to meet and exchange ideas on current issues in the field of Translation and Interpreting Studies with other new researchers from around the world. Developing translators are encouraged to apply for one of the 20 residency grants to be awarded. Each provides 2000 EURO, housing, a partnership with the MA in Translation Studies at the University of Bucharest , and workshops with Romanian translators. The deadline for the first session (April – June) is March 1, and for the second (October to December), August 1. Applicants should send a letter of intent, a CV, and one recommendation from a Romanian professor or translator, to the president of the institute.
