The PEN American Center sponsors a number of awards for translators and work in translation -- PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize, PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, the Gregory Kolovakos Award ,and the Translation Fund for publication support. Submission deadline for the Kolovakos Award and the Translation Fund grants is January 15. Information on these awards, including deadlines and applications, can be found here.

National Translation Award
Each year, ALTA invites publishers to nominate book-length translations, published in the preceding calendar year, for the ALTA National Translation Award. The award-winning book and translator are announced and featured at the annual ALTA conference held each fall. The translator selected for this award receives a cash gift, currently set at $2500.

To be eligible for the award, a translation must have been published during the preceding calendar year by a U.S. or Canadian publisher and must be a book-length work, in English, of fiction, poetry, drama, or creative non-fiction (literary criticism and philosophy are not eligible). For nominated books selected as finalists, publishers will be asked to provide an original-language version of the text; any finalist for which no original-language version is provided will be excluded from further consideration. The criteria for judging the award are: (1) the significance of the literary contribution of the original as well as of the translation; and (2) the success of the translation in recreating the artistry of the original. Translations of contemporary works will receive preference, although important retranslations or first-time translations of older works will also be considered to the degree that they make significant contributions to literature.

The deadline for nominating books published in the preceding calendar year is March 31. For each nominated book, send a letter of nomination, four copies of the book, and a $25 entry fee (check for U.S. funds made to ALTA) to:

ALTA Travel Fellowship Award
The ALTA Travel Fellowship Award is for beginning (unpublished or lightly published) translators. We offer fellowships for travel to the annual ALTA Conference held each autumn, at which a featured event is readings by the invited fellows. If you would like to apply for an ALTA Travel Fellowship, send a cover letter stating your desire to attend the conference, a CV and no more than ten double-spaced pages of translation (translation into English) accompanied by the original text to:

Developing translators are encouraged to apply for one of the 20 residency grants to be awarded. Each provides 2000 EURO, housing, a partnership with the MA in Translation Studies at the University of Bucharest , and workshops with Romanian translators. The deadline for the first session (April – June) is March 1, and for the second (October to December), August 1. Applicants should send a letter of intent, a CV, and one recommendation from a Romanian professor or translator, to the president of the institute. For the third time since 2007, the Mexican Organization of Translators (OMT) annual conference will take place in conjunction with the International Book Fair (FIL) in Guadalajara, Mexico, November 28-29, 2009. As the largest book fair in the Spanish-speaking world and the second most important one worldwide, the FIL offers translators an opportunity to establish contacts and explore professional domains.

The objective of the congress is to serve as a forum for professional advancement and enrichment for both translators and interpreters, as well as to provide a place to reflect on the practical and cultural problems we encounter in our work. With this aim, experts on an international level are invited to share their points of view and specialized knowledge about translation theory and practice. Educational sessions related to diverse translation and interpretation themes will also be held.

This year the FIL’s guest of honor is Los Angeles, a city where Americans, Mexicans and other immigrants come together, where a myriad of languages are spoken on the street and signs are written in different alphabets—a city that clearly evokes the idea of borderlines, where two or more cultures meet. This is precisely the same place where translators and interpreters find themselves: the point of contact between two cultures and the bridge that connects them. In the case of physical borders between countries, these, too, enter into the challenging field of action facing the translator and interpreter. That’s why the theme of this year’s conference will be the borderline—both physical and symbolic—as seen from the perspective of translation and interpretation. This central theme gives rise to a range of topics that we propose as possible areas of interest: translation and intercultural negotiation; cultural and linguistic identity; translation and immigration; contact between languages and linguistic interference; bilingualism and translation; Spanglish; as well as more general themes such as translator training, translation tools, translation and interpretation in specific fields, etc.

Anyone interested in participating as a presenter in the congress should send a proposal via email with the subject “San Jeronimo 2009” to sanjeronimo09@gmail.com before June 12, so that the organizing committee has time to evaluate the idea. The email should contain the candidate’s contact information along with an attached file in Word with the following information: Title and brief summary of the proposed presentation (maximum 300 words) and a brief résumé (no more than 200 words). The presentations will be 45 minutes long. The committee will announce its decisions on the proposals after July 15.
