Public Profile Anne Milano Appel Primary Profession: Independent Translator Expertise: Literary Translation Language(s): Italian Bio: I am a professional freelance translator, a native English speaker, and I translate from Italian into English. A former library director and language teacher, I have been translating professionally for almost fifteen years, and am a member of ALTA, ATA and PEN. Several of my book-length translations have been published, and shorter works that I have authored or translated have appeared in other professional and literary venues. My translation of Stefano Bortolussi's novel Head Above Water was the winner of the 2004 Northern California Book Award for Translation. My translation of Giulio Leoni's novel Mosaic Crimes was published simultaneously in the US and UK by Harcourt and Harvill, in 2007. Last year I completed a non-fiction work for Farrar, Straus and Giroux (Why Italians Love to Talk about Food) which was released in October, 2009, and the novel Blindly by Claudio Magris, published by Hamish Hamilton/Penguin Canada in April, 2010. Most recently I translated a novel for Penguin UK (Giovanni Arpino’s Scent of a Woman), forthcoming in April, 2011.
