Primary Profession: Educator (University Level)
Language(s): Spanish, English
Bio: Pamela DeWeese (Ph.D.: UNC-Chapel Hill). I am a professor of Spanish at Sweet Briar College and my area of specialization is the contemporary Spanish novel. My dissertation was on Antagonía by Luis Goytisolo and I have a book on the subject (Approximations to Luis Goytisolo's Antagonía, Peter Lang, 2000). I decided to translate Goytsiolo's novel, 360º Diary (Lang, 2008), in part because I felt his work deserved attention in the US, but also because I was attracted to the idea of translation. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and am now completing a translation of Laura Freixas' 2005 novel, Amor o lo que sea. I teach an introductory translation course to the advanced undergraduates at Sweet Briar and, at that level, have found translation to be an invaluable teaching tool to drive home the importance of cultural literacy when learning another language. I have recently published a translation of Luis Goytisolo's 1992 novel, Estatua con palomas, for which he won the Spanish National Prize for Literature in 1993 with the Edwin Mellen Press (2013).
