Zachary Larson

Language(s): German; some Chinese

Bio: I am currently obsessed with the works of the German author Alfred Döblin, whose abilities rank him as world's best, but who is widely unknown in not just the world, but even in his own country of origin. Much of his work does not exist in English, owing greatly to the difficulty of his language. Please visit the link below for a sample of a short story of his that I have translated. After graduating from a public high school in America, I studied abroad in Germany for a year as an exchange student, spending half of that time in a smaller village in North Rhine-Westphalia, Kleve, and half the year in Berlin. I fell in love with all facets of German culture, from the idyllic country-side to the bustling metropolis of Berlin, and have continued to pursue a greater depth of understanding through interaction and literature. Afterwards, I joined the United States Air Force as a cryptographic linguist and further honed my language skills, graduating from the prestigious Defense Language Instituted of the Presidio of Monterey, California with a Certificate in Chinese Mandarin. I am fluent in German, proficient in Chinese, and studied in many other languages. Translation is both an immense pleasure and a terrible affliction for me. It is my deepest desire to translate the works of Alfred Döblin, and to find a means to publish some of these forgotten masterpieces which have never before seen their way in existence in the English language.
