Sports Report

Success is nothing new to the sports programs in the University of Texas at Dallas Athletics Department, but few teams have achieved the level of accomplishment that the UTD baseball team has continuously reached since the program was formed in 2002.

The Comets, who have never had a losing season and have played in the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Championship game in three of the last four years, are well on their way to getting back there again in 2007.

UTD entered last weekend’s schedule with an impressive 19-5 record and was unbeaten in nine conference games. The fast start caught the attention of the voters in the American Baseball Coaches Association’s national NCAA Division III poll, who included the Comets in their Top 30 last week for the first time since 2004. The Comets were ranked as the fifth best team in the West Region, which includes universities in the baseball “hot beds” of Texas and California.

The 2007 Comets are well on their way to becoming the best hitting team in school history. UTD is currently hitting .374 as a team, over 50 points higher than the school’s alltime record and certainly among the national leaders. The Comets are scoring an average of nearly 10 runs a game and have five starters hitting over .400.

UTD still has nine more ASC East Division games on its schedule, but has a comfortable lead in the race to be the top divisional seed in the conference’s post-season playoffs. With a first-round series win in those playoffs, UTD would be in line to host the 2007 ASC Championship Tournament
