Alumni Spotlight: Award-winning Slam Poet Jonathan "GNO" White

Jonathan 'GNO' White GNO White, born Jonathan Charles White, is making changes at UT Dallas. GNO, pronounced "Gino" and an acronym for Geometric Nubian Orator, is the student activities coordinator and the advisor for the Student Union Activities Advisory Committee (SUAAB) at UT Dallas. But before his time as a well-known staff member on campus, he was a student at UT Dallas.

GNO received his bachelor's at UT Dallas in 2005 and completed his master’s in 2007. As a student, GNO was a student worker for SUAAB. While pursuing his master's degree in fine arts, the position for SUAAB advisor became available. With a background in art performance and an already solid dedication to SUAAB as a student worker, applying for the advisor position was something he knew he wanted to do. And, to GNO's luck and the luck of the UT Dallas students, he got the job.

SUAAB is a student organization responsible for planning social events on campus, such as movie nights, outdoor concerts and comedic performances. Due to GNO's vision, it is now responsible for UT Dallas' Underground Poetry Circus.

The Underground Poetry Circus is one of GNO's proudest accomplishments. Named after poetry circuses in Mexico, in which two poets go inside a real boxing ring to "fight," the Underground Poetry Circus at UT Dallas features national and international poets and national and local bands and DJs. With its growing popularity, the Underground Poetry Circus is not just open to UT Dallas students, but also to the public.

When you talk to GNO you will see and hear his passion for the arts. His work is well known throughout poetry communities nationwide. He is an award-winning slam poet, competing in National Poetry Slam events. Aside from being a veteran of slam poetry, GNO is also a published poet. He published his first book, Process of Confession, in 1999 and has had his work published in Poetry Slam.

GNO is dedicated to UT Dallas and plans to keep working here, mentoring and working with students. He is proud of his accomplishments as a student and a staff member, and hopes to add more to the list. His most recent project is serving on the committee responsible for composing and writing the UT Dallas fight song.

In addition to all his academic, artistic and professional accoplishments, GNO was once named as one of D Magazine's "64 People Who Are Making Dallas Hot." How lucky we are to have the creative fireball blazing new trails here on our campus.
