After a whilrwind semester that has included
UT Dallas' first springtime Homecoming, our first New Alumni Happy Hour, the eighth annual Ring Presentation Ceremony, commencement ceremonies for almost 2,000 new alumni, and our third, and best-ever, Jazz at the DMA alumni reception, I'm looking forward to the summer semester, which offers some time for planning, introspection and fresh direction.
One of the big things that we'll be working on this summer is this e-newsletter, the Alumni Link. Since February 2007, we've published the Link monthly. Now, after more than two years of continuous publication, the Link is going on hiatus for the months of July and August. When it returns in September, expect to see an updated look and lots of fresh content. If you've got thoughts about the types of stories and news you'd like to see covered here, send me an email. Your input is most appreciated.
The work in the alumni office, however, is not taking a break this summer. We have more projects going on than ever before, all focused on keeping our alumni connected to UT Dallas and each other. I am especially excited to announce three big projects that are finally ready for primetime:
- Alumni email addresses. You’ve been asking for them for a long time, and now we have them. Stay connected to UT Dallas and share your Comet pride with everyone you email using your new UT Dallas alumni email address. It's free and easy to set up. Create yours online by visiting the alumni website and selecting "alumni benefits."
- The Regional Representatives network. Regional Representatives are UT Dallas alumni who have volunteered and been selected by
UT Dallas to represent the University in their own home towns. Regional Representatives agree to serve as points of contacts for potential students, fellow alumni, faculty and staff. When the University hosts an event in an area, when a student is considering attending UT Dallas, or when an alumnus moves into a new area, Regional Representatives act as friends and positive representatives of UT Dallas. If you're interested, visit the Regional Representatives page on the alumni website, sign up as a Regional Representative, and we'll be in touch with you shortly.
- Volunteer opportunities galore. You can now go online to search and sign up for volunteer opportunities. The University has both short- and long-term needs for which alumni are the perfect volunteers. If you have an hour to usher at an Arts and Performance event, or a semester to mentor a UT Dallas student, please visit the volunteer section of the alumni website. We're especially hoping for lots of alumni volunteers to assist with freshman move-in this year. With the new residence hall opening up, there are 400 additional freshmen who will be starting their college experience living at UT Dallas, and we'd love for them to know from the very beginning that they've got a network of alumni supporting them all the way through!
So if you’ll be in Dallas this summer, check out the volunteer opportunities and see if there's something that you would enjoy. If you're not in Dallas, consider becoming a UT Dallas Regional Representative to show your Comet pride wherever you now reside. Wherever you'll be this summer, create your own UT Dallas alumni email address for representing your alma mater while staying in touch with everyone you know!
Have a great summer and keep an eye on your inbox for the September issue of the Alumni Link!
