More than 150 alumni, faculty, staff and friends turned out for the 16th annual UT Dallas Scholarship Golf Tournament on May 21 at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson. The event benefits two endowed scholarship funds at UT Dallas: the Betty and Gifford Johnson Graduate Scholarship and the Patti Henry-Pinch Undergraduate Scholarship.
The Betty and Gifford Johnson Graduate Scholarship was named in honor of long-time supporters of UT Dallas, Betty and Gifford Johnson. Gifford Johnson was the second and final president of the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies (SCAS), which in 1969 became UT Dallas. He currently serves on the UT Dallas Development Board.
The Betty and Gifford Johnson Graduate Scholarship endowment was established in May 2006 and is administered by the Graduate Council, led by the UT Dallas dean of graduate studies, Dr. Austin Cunningham. Income from this endowment is used to defray the costs for a graduate student from each of UT Dallas' seven schools to attend a national conference in their field.
The Patti Henry-Pinch Undergraduate Scholarship was established in May 2006 in honor of Patti Henry-Pinch, a long-time supporter of UT Dallas and a Life Member of the UT Dallas Development Board. Patti has played an active role in all sixteen of the golf tournaments since the creation of the annual event. The Patti Henry-Pinch Undergraduate Scholarship supports undergraduate students enrolled at UT Dallas with preference given to students demonstrating financial need.
Over the past three years, these two endowed funds have awarded more than $21,000 in financial support to undergraduate and graduate students.
Taking top honors at the tournament was the team of
UT Dallas President,
Dr. David E. Daniel,
UT Dallas vice president for business affairs, Dr. Calvin Jamison, Brad Brown and Ron Gafford of title sponsor Austin Commercial, Todd Regis of The Practice Tee and Herbie Champlin.
If you missed this event, mark your calendar for Tuesday, September 29, when the UT Dallas Athletics Department hosts its annual golf outing to benefit the men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletic teams. |
