Students Surprise President Daniel for Anniversary
By Dr. Aaron Conley
Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations

Other than being a hot Texas summer day, nothing of major significance happened at UT Dallas on this past June 1. Five years ago, however, was the first day on the job for our new president, Dr. David E. Daniel. Over these past five years, UT Dallas has changed dramatically. For Grace Bielawski, a senior and current president of Student Government, the passing of Daniel’s five-year mark required some kind of recognition. “We all know President Daniel is quick to credit others for the accomplishments that have taken place here,” she said. “But the students know that his leadership is the driving force behind the direction UT Dallas is headed.”

Bielawski and fellow students conspired to arrange an unexpected presentation at the fall meeting of the UT Dallas Development Board. In front of more than 100 board members, deans, faculty and staff, Bielawski said, “While we know it’s not his style to celebrate his accomplishments, as president of Student Government and duly appointed representative of the students of UT Dallas, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Daniel, whether he likes it or not!” As a tribute to the still undefeated UT Dallas football team, students presented Daniel with a special jersey and football to commemorate his first five years.
