Two Gifts Make One Historic Moment

Guests watched the surprise unveiling of a banner that thanked the donors. The banner now hangs in the atrium of the Jindal School of Management.
The date of Oct. 7, 2011, will long be remembered at UT Dallas. Naveen Jindal MBA’92 returned from his home of Delhi, India, to join 1980 alumni Charles and Nancy Davidson of Houston for a celebration and announcement of their gifts at a campus-wide ceremony.
These gifts have a combined value of $30 million and represent the two largest alumni gifts in UT Dallas history. Both are designated to the School of Management. In recognition of these transformational gifts, The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved a request from President David E. Daniel to recognize the donors for their remarkable generosity.
The naming of both the Naveen Jindal School of Management and the Charles and Nancy Davidson Management Honors Program marks a turning point for UT Dallas, as these gifts come during a time of unprecedented support. Their gifts helped make the Fiscal ‘11 year a record fundraising year with more than $55 million in total gifts and pledges, surpassing last year’s record of more than $40 million.
But Fiscal ‘11 brought more than just a record dollar amount. The record was also broken for the total number of donors who gave. Just as impressive was the number of alumni donors and first-time donors. These figures helped make an even more compelling case for Jindal and the Davidsons to make their gifts, as they saw more alumni and others stepping up to support UT Dallas achieve its Tier One vision.
Naveen Jindal stands in front of the school that now bears his name.
When I’m asked why we’re seeing such record numbers, I like to invoke the popular sports cliché: “Everybody supports a winner.” UT Dallas is setting records in total student enrollment, faculty research expenditures and many other measures that demonstrate progress toward Tier One. Every gift, regardless of its size, is making this progress possible. We hope even more alumni and friends will join Naveen Jindal and Charles and Nancy Davidson, along with the many others who will help UT Dallas become an even bigger winner in the years to come.
