Office of Audit and Compliance

Student Interns

Internal Audit has been working with students from the School of Management's Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP) since 2003 when the program was piloted by UT Dallas Internal Audit and the IAEP. Since then, each fall and spring semester students from the Internal Audit class (AIM 6380) are assigned a class project to gain actual internal audit work experience.

As part of the project, the students interview with various organizations, including the UT Dallas Internal Audit department, and are selected based on their interview and resume to work on an audit during the semester under the supervision of the individual audit departments. Typically, the students will spend about 5-10 hours per week during the semester working on the audit. At the end of the semester, the students deliver a presentation on what they learned to the class and to the members of the internal audit departments. They receive a grade on the project with input from their in-charge auditors and chief audit executives. Since 2003, the UT Dallas Internal Audit department has worked with over 150 students on over 50 audits and hired about 10 students from the program. Currently, two of the full-time staff members were part of the IAEP program.

At the beginning of the project, students are given an intern manual outlining the office and audit policies and procedures and a list of expectations. Students must also sign a non-disclosure statement and an independence statement. Students receive training via a class presentation on risk assessment and planning given at the beginning of the semester by the Executive Director at UT Dallas, on-the-job training by their in-charges.

Through the IAEP, the UT Dallas internal auditing program is recognized by the Institute of Internal Auditors as one of only two university programs in the U.S. and five in the world as a Center for Internal Auditing Excellence. The program's graduates, considered among the best in the field, are sought by internationally renowned corporations and organizations. Under this internship program, students get actual internal audit work experience, and the Internal Audit department receives additional support through increased audit resources.

When funds are available, student interns who have exhibited outstanding performance during the class project may apply for a summer internship with the UT Dallas Internal Audit department.
