Spring, 2005
Dr. Gail Breen, a faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, has been awarded a two-year grant from the The American Health Assistance Foundation (AHAF) to analyze mitochondrial proteins in Alzheimer's disease. Mitochondria are the "powerhouses of the cell".
Co-investigators on this grant are UTD faculty members, Dr. Steve Goodman (Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and Director of the Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology), Dr. Santosh d'Mello (Department of Molecular and Cell Biology), and Dr. Pankaj Choudhary (Department of Mathematics).
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-dependent irreversible neurodegenerative disorder that causes a progressive deterioration of cognitive functions, including a profound loss of memory (www.alzheimers.org). There is no known cure for Alzheimer's disease.
