On January 17, 2002, Governor Perry announced the formation of a Council on
Science and Biotechnology Development. In his remarks he stated, “Now
is the time to prepare for what one of the world's most successful entrepreneurs
- Larry Ellison of Oracle - referred to as the ‘next big thing’
– biotechnology." Mr. Ellison recently said, "If I were 21 years
old, I wouldn't go into computing; I'd go into biotech or genetic engineering.’”
Dr. Robert C. Giles, Executive Director of Operations and Research and Development
for Orchid BioSciences, stated, in support of The University of
Texas at Dallas' M.S. in Biotechnology Program, “Having run
a laboratory in the Dallas area for the last 15 years, I am well
aware of the shortage of qualified Master’s level applicants
with biotechnology training. It is my opinion that a well-developed
program in this area will not only help meet the needs of the emerging
biotechnology business sector in the DFW area, but will actually
encourage the influx of new opportunities for biotech start-ups
… .”
